network limitations using WIFI_AP_STA / mesh networking

do you know wich limitations we have using WIFI_AP_STA mode in a network with ~ 100 ESP8266 devices in thins modality?
My idea is to use many ESP8266 devices both to create a network for communication of all the devices to MQTT broker.
I know that the ESP8266 stack has a default limit of 4 TCP client connection, i'm wondering if this limit is the same about WIFI STATION connected or not.
Basically, i'll have a standard AP router, and the many ESP8266 devices, each one in a range of 50/60 meters of the other in open environment with visibility across each point.
Do you know what kind of limitation i'll figure in this scenario?
