I have one on the way as well. Any idea what D0-D3 are? Data lines for the quad-SPI?

I guess so. If so, we should be able to write the flash directly without using UART on esp8266. I don't know whether it is possible to disable esp8266 then write to the SPI flash and enable the esp8266 again. If it is doable, it will be much faster to program.
