Is my ESP8266 dead?

Hello everyone,

I've had 2 ESP8266 modules, and they have been working fine until today.

I had them attached to an Arduino, powered like this: 5V(from Arduino)--->LM1117T(3V3)--->ESP8266(VCC + CH_PD).

Today I started my Arduino up and no signs of life from the module. The LED didn't come up and the ESP8266 was overheating. The LED stays off if the module is connected to 3.3V. I tried connecting it to 5V and the LED comes on. Sounds like a short, but the board looks fine.

I'll test for serial output as soon as I get a new serial adapter.

Any ideas?

Thanks

So far I broke six such devices (ES-07) .
In each case, regardless of how the device was broken, overheating was one of the symptoms.
In each case the Power LED stays ON.
In only one case the device continued to function but is overheating.
