No response to AT commands?

I'm just getting started with the ESP8266 and am having some trouble. I've connected the device to my Mac through an Adafruit "FTDI Basic" adapter (same symptoms happen with a "FTDI Friend"). The ESP8266 board's red LED lights up, and I see RX and TX lights blinking on the FTDI adapter, but all I get on the terminal screen is garbage, spit out in clumps every second or so. I've tried running the terminal at 115200, 57600, 38400, 19200, and 9600.

Can anyone suggest any steps for troubleshooting this problem?

Thanks!

Solution, flash custom firmware and use voltage regulator for from 5v to 3.3v .

Thanks for the suggestion, but could I ask for a little more detail? In particular: which firmware would I need, and where would I need a voltage regulator? The ESP8266 is being powered from a 3.3V source, and I have a voltage divider on the TX pin from the FTDI Basic board, which (if I'm understanding things right) will take the signal down from 5V to 3.3V.
