I'm trying to switch to light sleep by calling wifi_set_sleep_type(LIGHT_SLEEP_T); but then I still get 80mA, which is the same as not calling that at all (assuming that means no sleep). Am I missing something?

Yes, it's default. Set it to none and watch the power usage.
