ESP8266-01 with Raspberry Pi B+ limited to 9600 baud rate

Hello everyone,
I just joined this forum. I got a couple of ESP8266-01 boards that I want to experiment with and make a wireless weather station. To start off, I connected them to my RPi B+ (as detailed here: http://www.esp8266.com/wiki/doku.php?id=raspberrypi:getting_started)
I downloaded the picocom program on my raspberry pi and was able to connect to the esp8266. Firmware is listed as:
0018000902-AI03, [Vendor:www.ai-thinker.com Version:0.9.2.4].
The baud rate it connects with successfully, is 9600. I tried increasing it to 115200 but it refuses to connect at any baud rate other than 9600. Is this true? Can the baud rate be changed temporarily (reset to 9600 on reboot) for me to test?
Another question: some people mention difference between V080, V090, V091. How do I check what my board is?
Thank you.
