ESP8266 vs. CC3200 for commercial use?

Hi All,

I have to choose between ESP8266 and CC3200 for a commercial product in quantity of 1000-3000 pcs/year.

I intend to use a STM32 microcontroller along with the ESP8266 if I go with that solution - just to keep it easy to develop, and the price is still favorable compared to the CC3200. Furthermore I need need fixed antenna, which is why I'm looking at the ESP-07.

The CC3200 seems like an overkill to me - I just need to send a couple of sensor values and receive a few commands. So has anyone experience with using the ESP8266 for commercial use? what pros and cons do you see? and what would you do? :)

thanks.

For me I would go with the TI CC3200 for a production solution. The reason I state this is because the ESP8266 is not nearly as well documented as TI products. You can also get good support from TI if a problem happens but I'm not convinced that level of support will happen with the ESP8266. The ESP8266 seems like a good product so far, but from my viewpoint both the company and the chip are relatively new. What happens if you release your product and later find a problem? I think the odds of this happening with the ESP8266 are much higher than with the TI CC3200.

This is total bullshit, TI support is non-existant, the CC3000 is a security and stability fiasco, see this thread:

In particular, follow the link on TI's forum regarding the easy connect feature, this wil make your day!

One point on which I agree with you is the quality of TI's documentation, though.

Yes ! I've lost a lot of time to figure out this issue with my CC3000 module. Now, it getting dust in a drawer.
