Power supply trouble

I can program my ESP when it's hooked up to an Arduino and I am powering it with the 3.3v connection on the Arduino. I'm only using the Arduino for power and a serial connection. I want to use a different PSU because I don't want to put the extra stress on the Arduino.I have tried using 2 different power supplies that put out 800ma and are 5v. I have a regulator (Link) hooked up between the PSU and the ESP. The esp will turn on and run but It won't let me program with this setup. Does anyone know what I am missing?

Have you ever been able to program it? What does your circuit look like?
Here is a link to the circuits I follow:

I have 3.3v gnd, rx & tx comming from the arduino to the esp. I can program it fine with that setup. I am unable to program it when I move the 3.3v and gnd to a different power supply. The power supply will turn it on but I can't program it.

In your external power supply story, do you still have ground from the Arduino connected to ground of the ESP8266? You need a common ground. It would also help to see a schematic of what you have built ... failing that, maybe post some photographs.
