Programming ESP8266 with Arduino

Recently came across the ESP8266 and then of course this great resource. I've seen examples of the ESP8266 without an arduino attached. My question is can I still upload code to the ESP8266 using an arduino or have I missed something along the way? I have yet to get the ESP8266 up and running but wondering how I would get the code onto the microcontroller.

You can use it as a standalone MCU, no problem at all.
