ESP8266 ESP-12 generates signal noise

I have a project that includes an ESP-12 variant, a rasberry pi type motherboard (Odroid-C1) , a mini preamp and an electret microphone with auto-gain. Everything is working well, except the ESP-12 is generating noise that sound like 'ticks' in the background that come over the audio. I have confirmed this because when the ESP-12 is removed the audio is clean and clear.

I have tried running the entire setup from batteries and the ticks/noise goes away, but this setup will need constant power.

I also tried supplying the setup with a 5v 4a power adapter (previously a 2a) to no avail.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can reduce/eliminate the line noise?

Steve

You not applying that to the ESP-12 are you?

Oh - let me clarify that, I am using this HUZZAH ESP8266:

https://www.adafruit.com/products/2471

It supports 5v. I did at one time have just the ESP-12 microcontroller and at that time I was using the 3.3v rail from the Odroid-C1 motherboard. There was noise in that setup as well.

Thoughts?
