ESP8266 and WS2801 questions.

I am interested in using an ESP8266 device to control some LED's using the WS2801 chip. I notice that Markus Gritsch has got support for the very similar WS2812 chip working with the ESP8266, but it's left me with some questions.
My understanding is that the WS2801, WS2811 and WS2812 are compatible with one another, does the WS2812 driver work with the other chips?
The demo code from Markus is shown controlling a whole strip of LED's as one device, fading them all as one. Is there a way to control individual LED's in a strip?
Thanks
J
