debugging Help needed.

I am very much new to esp8266 and espressif sdk.
for a start , i built the iot example from sdk and flashed on to the module.
I am trying to make sense of what is going on in the example from the logs, but I am not able to see anything on the serial output. All i see is continuous junk characters. I tried setting different baud rates, but still no luck.
as this may be very simple issue many might know, but i would really appreciate if someone can point me to the solution.
