Hi,

some ideas...

1) maybe it's a configuration issue with the spi. Check out the official flashing tool. It features auto setup and debug functionality.

(dl link on the bottom of the page)

2) Switch to 9600 baud

3) Reduce noise in the circuit (capacitor between GND and VCC pins), My ESP07's crystal generates much noise on tx and GPIO02. Don't know if it's normal but it could have an impact on BER during serial communication.

4) Did the chip function properly with its default firmware? Maybe faulty batch?

Good luck!

PS, Do you have a link to this XTCOM utility? It could be helpful for my case:

What FTDI are you using? What drivers are you using?

if using FT232RL usb-serial swap it out - they don't like long data streams..
get a crystal controlled usb-serial converter and save yourself some grief
