GPIO on NodeMCU/ESP8266 vs GPIO on other boards

Is the gpio on boards such as the arduino and raspberry pi effectively the same as the gpio on NodeMCU/esp8266 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/301592972948 ... EBIDX%3AIT). The reason I ask is I already have a raspberry pi and know of several tutorials for connecting a circuit to the gpio of the pi. Could I use the same schematic to on the NodeMCU/esp8266. Specifically I am wondering if I can use this circuit http://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials ... -cms-20051 to control the motors on a wireless car.
