Arduino, Nodemcu based on SDK?

Hello everyone,
As for a project we are considering different ways to program the ESP8266. As I work with STM32 I usually use the reference manual with the register to program my uController. As far as I finded out, Espressif doesnt give any information about the architecture of the ESP8266. Some people achieved to find out what Memoryareas are for, but in general we dont dont much about this chip. So the other way to access this uController are the prebuild-functions of the SDK. Is that right?
So is it true that Nodemcu, Arduino and so on, all make use of the official SDK of Espressif? How else would they be able to use peripherals of the ESP8266?
Greetings
Felix
