NodeMCU 1.4 on ESP-201 does not work

I'm stuck and I don't understand it. I cannot flash NodeMCU 1.4 custom build to an ESP-201. It works on a nodemcu devkit or even on a blank ESP12. I can flash the ESP-201 using Arduino and the sketch starts up. Also I can upload NoceMCU 1.4 using "make flash" to the ESP-201 but it won't start up. It always get stuck in the bootloader. I tried different -ff and -fm parameters with esptool.py without success. Even if I use the same parameters which work in Arduino IDE.
Any ideas?
