I am looking for some advice on serial bridges

What would be the simplest way to create a serial bridge between 2 ESP8266's (not involving a router) ?
i.e. send single data byte on one ESP .... other ESP picks this data byte up to control things ... and/or Vica-Versa .
(I can do it easily using bluetooth....I am not a fan of BT so would like to find a fast ESP WIFI solution)
I am using the Arduino environment so any hints in this direction would be greatly appreciated.
N.B. I have searched high and low, on and off for a couple of months now in ESP8266 forums here and elsewhere - alas I am failing in my quest ... is there anyone out there that can lighten my burden
Best Regards Gareth aka chiprobot
