auto connect to wireless router

it's working fine and the WiFi (ESP8266, of course) connects nicely to my wireless router
but...
I have to tell it the SSID and password (they are stored in EEPROM)
is there any way, protocol, methodology, black magic that would allow it to connect all by itself?
I thought uPnP might be the way to go, but the more I look there, the more my eyes glaze over
I'd like to tap into the WPS button on the router, but I can't find the protocol
anyone got any clues?
can anyone give me a nudge in the right direction?
