ESP8266 and Bluetooth?

I am a newby and just purchased one of the ESP8266 ESP-01 Wi-Fi Serial Port Transceivers. I was hoping that I would be able to control LED's, motors etc using one of these and a smartphone using Bluetooth. Is this correct? Or have I bought the wrong thing? Are there any tutorials giving instructions for switching LED's on and off for example? I have also read about updating the firmware on one of these, is this necessary? Sorry for all of the questions but I really need to get to grips with this module.

Thanks

Brian :?

Bluetooth is not necessary. You can configure the esp as a device on your LAN and then use something like port forwarding on your router to allow access anywhere via internet to say your smart phone. There are lots of examples in this forum.
