I don't understand the magic out there ...
Could you explain how the LAT/LNG is calculated, who is calculating it and where the data comes from !
Looking at the thread you provided doesn't give any answers to those questions.

For what I could understand on that thread, it gathers information about nearby access points, and then contacts some online database to get the location.

This uses LoRA communication and it is called "Low Power Wide Area NetWork". Its like using RFM12/RFM69/RFM96w. This is new emerging technology for IoT device communication other than Wifi/GSM. This is being tested in Europe and India.
