Program a regular Arduino 328MCU OTA via ESP8266?

Can this be done? Surely someone has nutted this out? I'm totally new to ESP8266's but comfortable in Arduino /AVR land.
I know the ESP8266 can itself be programmed OTA, but I have a number of existing embedded Arduino devices (Pro Mini's etc) around my house that I would like to be able to reprogram wirelessly. I understand I could replace them with ESP8266's in some cases, but for now I want to keep the Arduino's in place.
So the idea would be to permanently connect an ESP8266 to the serial programming port on each of my Arduino's instead of the FTDI Serial to USB wired modules I use today.
Thanks,
Paul
