I've been using MQTT & Node-Red a little - check this: http://www.cse.dmu.ac.uk/~sexton/node/KISS
I put this together for a student class.
The board in the photos has been updated - I'm waiting for PCBs from China.
The update (below?) uses the spare I/O pins for an OLED display and a DS18B20 temperature sensor.

rewrote wifi scan sketch and wrote my own SSD1306 library,
fixed garbage with 1.3" OLEDs ..

Hi Ian,

Sorry I missed your post, like you I am sure our students are quite knackered at this moment end of the academic term getting the last bit of work out of them is a real mission.
Really like the board work here. I really enjoy the projects you do with your learners, I think I will also create a blog of all of the cool stuff we do here.

I have them hooked on ESP modules Would love to see your code any chance of posting it?
Trying very hard to make a stable MQTT network solution. So far I now have the network routines and checking re connect reliable at last phew. Just working on the MQTT side without causing a WDT reset as per my other post. Once all my marking is finished I will be on the case.

- Fri Jun 26, 2015 12:52 pm #21786 Layed out and soldered up a teeny tiny Wifi Scan board this week. Tried to fit it all behind the 0.96" glass.

Not much to it if you would like to make your own. A few 0402 parts, 3.3V LDO, glas and the ESP-01. The manufacturing files are on git at: https://github.com/mike-rankin/ESP8266_OLED_Display
