then you can solder wires directly to spi flash and dump it.

That XTCOM_UTILITY can only use COM1 to COM6, so when using UART<->USB adapter ensure that it got mapped in that range.

I don't want to desolder it as I don't trust my skills enough to get it working again.

May try soldering some wires to the chip in place and try reading it with an RPi.

There's also stuff like http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_nkw=soic+clip for such cases. But don't make us wait for your delivery of that too . I'm sure you ordered more than 1 module, so don't be too shy to fry one in the name of common good ;-D.

Stefan from flashrom was so nice to create a new branch which supports the spi flash on the module. I can't do it until tomorrow. Please some one hook up with your rpi and esp8266 boars
