Check the wring of you USB to serial adapter and or if you have gpio 0 grounded.

#28660 If you are still having this error, it's because the IDE cannot make contact with your esp.
Make sure you have a hefty power supply going to your esp (mine is 1.5A, regulated down to 3.3v). This alone fixed several issues I was having.
Also, you may want to build a circuit like this (http://www.xess.com/blog/esp8266-reflash/) if you don't have t his already, to make sure you enter flash mode reliably. My circuit works about half the time, but then again it's built on a breadboard, which may be picking up EMI/RFI or buttons may be bouncing, etc.

I'm running it from the arduino (chipless) but I think the wires may not be connecting properly.

#28724 Tried the power adapter and still nothing!
ordered a ftdi dodad.
all pins are connected a supplies to the correct pins, tried swapping txd and rxd around and got packet delevery failure so switched around
