I believe the latest v0.9.3 firmware and AT v0.20 commands officially posted by espressif addresses part of these issues, they say they've added support for UDP and that you can now get/set the STAtion and AP MAC address through the AT commands.
For myself, even though that module is a bit rough still, I think both the community and Espressif are working in the good direction and in good spirits, trying to make this progress intelligently.
Espressif has released the source that you can compile, are seem to be taking input from users on their BBS forums, and seem to be willing to address the issues, and provide a fantastic module given the price point, IMHO...
