I've written an alternative AT-command-firmware that's optimized for network access from lower-speed computers, but works great at high serial speeds as well.
Aside from a more complete AT-set, it has several different kinds of flow control, telnet-code handling in its Stream mode, and numerous other features. Check out the README at the github site for more information.
