There are no other notifications from esptool.py indicating that it failed to start, thus the issue must be related to the usb serial port and the usb driver. Specifically, the NodeMCU's CH340 usb serial port must be supported. While this is included by default in the vast majority of Linux variants, you may need to manually install it in others.
