huh? what kind of single rechargeable battery reaches 4.2v? even 18650, LiFePO4 or lipo won't do that, or do you mean the voltage coming from the usb socket (into the batteries) which should be more like 5v @ 500mA

#15215 I have the same case too.

All these module output 4.2v, which is the voltage of fully charged Li-ion battery.

ESP8266 can take 4.2V, I'v been running for a few months now.( Connect Lipo battery directly to ESP-07, ESP-12 )
