Actually the main component of the board is ESP8266. There are two seperate sides. The microcontroller side lets the user interface with the module and provide some fundamental peripherals which will be useful while creating an ESP8266 based project. The other side is USB-Serial converter which allows the user control the module via PC for manual communication.
ESP-07 or ESP-12 would be a better choice, I agree. Since this is an open source project, the board can be easily modified for this purpose.
