#6908 The circuit above will work if the relay is solid state with a logic input.
If you're looking to drive a conventional relay, you will probably need to use a transistor. This page http://www.winpicprog.co.uk/pic_tutorial_extras.htm has a number of circuits that are useful in connecting various devices to a chip.

It seems to work well being driven directly from the GPIO pins of the NodeMCU. I can't say for certain that I'd endorse it but I haven't found any issues yet.

fed from 3.3v and connected directly to an ESP-07. Not sure how good it is for the relay but I have not had any issues so far
