I did that myself a couple of days ago with a Lolin nodemcu board.
Luckily I saw what burnt out as I made the wrong connection.
There is (was) a power diode from the USB 5 v pin to the regulator and this failed. There was a crack in the plastic visible under a magnifier and the thing showed resistance in both directions.
I unsoldered it and replaced - very fiddly.
