I agreee that spi miso,mosi and clk are hardware driven however ss has nothing to do with the hw, it is a way to select any slave and should be made flexible.
For the time being I do not see any theoritical problem. Howerver I have an issue while flashing the code, this still unclear for me ,but it looks that a power off/on seems to be necesary between flash loads.
So for me the advantages of using gpi016 as ss are agreater than the drawbacks.
