There are lots of threads on how to erase the flash and start over in discrete modules, but this 8266 is mounted on the standard arduino board. Aside from this output, it doesn't seem to be responsive to any re-programming that I have tried.

Time to put your literal hat on. Exactly as I said.

This is a Wemos D1 R2 Arduino board.



And a discrete module would be just a discrete 8266 by itself.

The difference is the board has other electronics attached to the module that would interfere with normal recovery practices employed with a discrete module, as posted in this forum elsewhere.
