surely cellphone batteries are just lipo's, so need a protection circuit too?

Most are lipo these days, some for older phones or with lower capacity might be li-ion. And yes, they do need protection, they usually have a protection circuit build-in. That said, I would still use a charger with added protection circuit (can't hurt to be paranoid).

- Sun Mar 22, 2015 4:43 pm #12442 lag in the first video is due to the phone used. a low power htc hd mini. it is communicating over bluetooth and wifi in the video making the phone very hot.
