I suppose I could upload the command directly once relying on the fact that the Arduino will persist the AP+CWMODE mode setting; once the mode parameters are set in my application as a Station or AP they will unlikely needed changing. All other commands sent to the function do not require escape characters. Yes it is a cop-out for me but there is the law of 'diminishing returns'! Thanks for your help anyway and will investigate this issue further in slow time.
