Hello,
Your hint with the 'snake-oil' is a good idea. I have tried it with Pratik's 1 MB blank.bin. But in my case without success. It seems, that these 4 chips are real trash. Fortunately a bunch of reordered new ESPs work fine.

I had this behavior with some ESP-01 with my WiFi-repeater. Flashing the SDK 2.0 firmware with firmware files at 0x00000 and 0x10000 leads to character garbage. Using the same chips with SDK 1.5.4 firmware with firmware files at 0x00000 and 0x40000 works well. Sometime it works than afterwards also with the SDK 2.0 firmware. "Snake Oil"! No idea what's wrong. Either something with the flash chips or some magic with the config-area in the flash...?

This has been the right hint! The flash with firmware based on older SDK and adresses 0x00000 and 0x40000 works. Very strange.
