While the esp is spec'ed for 1.8-3.6v (IIRC), other devices may require 3v or more. 2xAA is 2.4v (NiMH, though will start higher). I, for example, use a ds18b20 which requires at least 3v. I use 3xAA (or a 1xLi-Ion or 1xLiPo) with an MCP1700.
