#57876 When I was trying to get my ESP8266 to work, I also was having similar problems.
After a lot of reading, I finally figured out it was power supply problems. I was using a solderless breadboard and one of those dual voltage power supplies fed by a 12V wall wort.
It seems the regulator chips on that power supply would "throttle" the current out so the board would not overheat. Hooked it up to a 9V wall wort and problems disappeared! Both wall worts were rated at 2amp so that was not the problem.

Hope this helps and as always, YMMV
