Yep, that's how some mains led lights work. There are modular Hilink 'all-in-one' components which are either 3.3v or 5v and do the rectification and the step-down, and are quite small (3cmx2cm).

Yes I have a couple of those running a Nodemcu each and a sensor. The sensor needs 5V and I am powering the Nodemcu with 5V via the Vin pin.
I was advised to add a surge resistor ( varistor ) before the PSU and I have a fuse.
