It is best to do this separately rather than going through the board and powering it from one of the board connectors. This avoids passing the potentially quite high LED current through the micro connector and through board traces.
+1 to this comment. I've done a very similar project and I power my LED bank direct from the power supply with a separate LDO on the ESP8266. For one of my projects that simply needs to flash the LED bank, I then use a simple transistor switch circuit attached to one of the ESP GPIO pins. For the other project I use an LM3435 driver chip and connect that to I2C on the ESP
