This is the cheapest ESP8266 I could find at £1.38 and it has a couple of GPIO pins. I probably wouldn't want to use the Wi-Fi functionality because it would make it too complicated and don't think I'd need an RTC because I'm happy to just switch it on at 2100 hrs and then it can count the time from there.
