...I wanted to describe why I'd like to have this functionality, because someone else might also find it useful, or think of another way to implement the main idea. I am using an ESP-12E as a MQTT client. Subscribed brokers ping their clients. I think it would be nice to trigger flashing the on-board LED when a ping is received. I believe it would be a great way to know quickly that the client and broker were very likely communicating, and helpful for quick troubleshooting, peace of mind, etc...
