I'm confusing the PCF8574 and PCF8574A - which do have different addresses from each other (but as you say are common between the NXP and TI).

However, neither have an address at 0x40. The PCF8574 base address is 0x20 and the PCF8574A base address is 0x38.

(I assume you mean 0x40 including a r/w bit set to 0, but 0x41 with the bit set to 1.)
