They're completely different environments, you'd need to run the compiled binary from the Arduino IDE alongside a LUA interpreter, with some method of bridging between the two, that's a LOT of programming, probably not going to happen unless there's a really good reason to put so much effort into doing so, of which I really can't think of one.
I don't even think such a thing is possible with the given memory constraints.
SMTP and POP3 are simple enough, if there isn't already a library, one will exist or be ported at some point.
You have to keep in mind that this hardware platform only really became available early last year, and this project in particular has been going for a matter of months (IIRC), it's going to take time and effort from people who having the coding skills to write such libraries.
