MCP16311 is not exactly the cheapest thing in town but is has some capabilities that it makes a good option as a DC-DC converter for ESP8266 projects.
If you are in a run for the cheapest solution, the classic MC34063 buck converter configuration might suffice for your needs.

I wish i can find schematics and parts list for dc-dc with fixed output which uses MC34063, anyone???
