Hi,
Sp6 of Visual Micro contains some important, hopefully final, changes for the new Arduino 1.6 contributed hardware system.
There are some important fixes and workarounds which strength the plugins compatibility with the latest Arduino 3rd party build spec.
It's true to say that this awesome esp8266.com project has tested Visual Micro's compatibility and resilience to the limit so this work will benefit many others in the future. Thanks!!
Another important issue that has been resolved became obvious when both adafruit esp8266 v1.6.1 and v1.6.2 were combined in Board Manager with the latest esp8266.com v1.6.4. If 1.6.4 had been installed via the arduino ide then the visual micro compile would fail because it was unable to locate the 1.6.4 release. In the latest release of Visual Micro you will see that the adafruit and esp8266 versions are combined into a single list and that Visual Micro correctly determines which platform is installed.
Look forward to hearing how you get on with Sp6.
Thanks., Tim
