In case anyone is interested, I solved the issue as proposed by Barnabybear (but using a PNP transistor instead of the P-ch. mosfet)
PNP did work, because during boot the RXD pin is set to INPUT. A pin which is set to INPUT will only sink a few microamps, therefore the LED won't turn on.
