it seems that most of the pins are exposed to 100mil connectors. I already ordered one.. will see.

I guess so. If so, we should be able to write the flash directly without using UART on esp8266. I don't know whether it is possible to disable esp8266 then write to the SPI flash and enable the esp8266 again. If it is doable, it will be much faster to program.
