i think the whole point is can someone who has signed the NDA confirm that that is the document they send you, or is it a bigger more detailed datasheet, i.e. is it worth signing the NDA or not.

It can help put things in perspective.
IMHO, what you risk most by infringing on a NDA with a chinese company is damaging your reputation, your self-esteem and your karma.
[This can be important, especially if you also have a real paid job with an I/T company...]
Beyond that, they're not going to sue you...

Yes, I really found that post inspirational - we have to find a way to balance the need for rewarding investment in creating things, with allowing people to benefit from cross-fertilisation of idea, ie copying things.
I don't see the west as a great model to follow, with patents on clicking, the rounded rectangle and all, but I'm not convinced that a totally free-for-all-bazaar is the best model either.
As well as an interesting point for late-night debate - I have a real need to gain information, I want to go to kickstarter and not have to worry that somehow I can get sued for reading stuff.
And I'd rather not hide, or fudge the issue as a way of solving it - it is things like this that can hold back the hacker community - the idea that you have to pay to join, sign the nda's etc in order to make stuff. Perhaps you don't?!
What if you could just have a good idea, work hard to refine it, and then just release it onto the world - without being a big company?? If you could make a modest but decent living out of that sort of behaviour - wouldn't that start to disrupt a few things in an interesting and socially progressive way?
