Use a crystal controlled USBRxTx converter , if you want more reliable loads..

I had this same error message - I really thought it might be a cabling/power problem. I tried editing esptool.py, it helped a little but was still unable to flash it.
Updated esptool to the latest and it worked right away! My old esptool.py worked fine flashing other builds but wouldn't load nocemcu firmware.
